He taught her the true spirit of unconditional love and devotion. She taught him that love can be found within the very thing that you fear and detest the most. Together their commitment to each other and a vision that they chose to honor endured a lifetime and came to fruition generations later.

A well established and popular writer, Darcy Butler has been researching her family genealogy. There is one final tie that she cannot seem to find. Her search has led her to the Crow Indians. She has been in contact with Lilly who invites her to the reservation. Lilly informs her of an elderly man who lives on the land of their fathers. He claims to have the connection that Darcy needs to complete the link. His name is Tiponi. He has established that he will not leave this life until he has told his story to ‘the great storyteller’ as prophesized by his ancestors.

Darcy obtains more than she anticipated once she meets this man of wisdom. She is taken on a spiritual as well as mystical journey. Darcy will learn of a beautiful and forgotten culture. She will experience a life once lived by a warrior and an aristocratic woman through the eyes of this misunderstood but envisioned narrator.

Through Tiponi, Darcy will witness a story of love and dedication in the purest form.

She will meet the spirits of the past who were able to evolve from their own cultures and prejudices for a higher cause. She in turn must face some of her own limitations and misconceptions.

As an avid genealogist I thought the premise of this novel appealing as I too am looking into my heritage. Little did I know that I was going on a beautiful, heartbreaking, and life affirming journey with Darcy, a woman in search of her own heritage.

She journeys to the Crow reservation in Montana to meet with an elder by the name of Tiponi who will be instrumental in changing her outlook on life and relationships.

Ms. Post weaves a tapestry of the past and the present in a very smooth, coherent story. Darcy is dealing with her relationship with Jack in the present, and she learns about the lives of Running Wolf and The Mourning Dove and their descendants in the past.

I found this novel hard to put down and became drawn into the story from the past and how it affected Darcy in the present. By the end of the novel I found myself crying with joy and heartbreak for these people who became so real to me and I didn’t want the story to end.

I highly recommend this novel. You won’t be disappointed.

Loved the change of story lines occurring thru out...and how it all comes together. A real feel good love story with history learning also.
Who can be sure what their background really is if they go far enough back? Interesting that the oral tradition can hold so many answers to her questions.
It was slow reading at first. Once you are caught up in the past you feel it melt with future. It is a very awesome trip through time to learn of one woman's search into her heritage. How she was predestend to be the "Story Teller." It is so easy to fall in love with the Crow tribe with Rebecca. It can be emotional at times. Spiritual at others. It's a good read at a great price from .
When I first chose this eBook (I got it for free), I was basically interested in it because of my own Indian ancestral heritage. Altho mine isn't Crow, as it is in The Spirits of Nature, I was still looking forward to what I thought would be a good read.

The characters in this story had so many tribulations to overcome, from one extreme to the next. No one member of this family was left without a sorrow of their own to deal with. My first thought of Rebecca was that she was a very precocious young lady! I felt so sorry for her older brother Phillip, trying to protect her and being punished for her wrong doings. Even after she was sent away to live with an Aunt for 'female' guidance, she seemed to have matured while away. But as soon as she was back in her own family home, she was 'stirring the pot' as they say. Brother Phillip intervened yet again! Poor Jeremiah was at his wits end concerning his daughter. So when she had announced that she was leaving with her cousin to go out west, Phillip and her father where heartbroken, but son realized it was for the best.

Once the wagon train had made it about half way to their destination, Rebecca went for a walk, never to return. She was kidnapped by traders & sold her to the Crow indians. There she spent the next 30 years, learning their ways, the language, and learning how to love.

I can not say anything more as to not give away the story, but readers? If you want a read that will tug at your heart strings and give you something to think about…then by all means…READ THE SPIRITS OF NATURE!!!! I PROMISE you…you will NOT be disappointed!!!

Thank you Michelle Post for such a wonderful story!!!

Enjoy fellow readers!
Is a wonderful story. I am interested in the mountainman era, the times of the early movement into the west of the whites, and the end of the native Indian 's skilled life in harmony with nature. It is a bit romantic, but a good story never the less.
It is difficult to review this book without disclosing the events of the book. I would have rated it higher but there were too many typos and stilted sentences. The author does capture the idealism and beliefs of the Native American culture and presents it well.
An honest assessment of one's own learned behavior patterns vs. how points of view may be misinterpreted by those raised in a different culture I found myself humbled, and remembering that I most enjoy being around others when I'm simply accepting the beauty of everyone else's spirit, and not trying to fit in or make other people's beliefs fit in with my own. The story is also a reminder that cultures do not have to bend, but rather blend graciously with an abiding respect for one another. There are several parallel stories consisting of culture, personalities, and relationships. Unfortunately there are many misspelled words in the edition.
